The president of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened to withdraw support for the British regarding the Falkland Islands/Malvinas. The threat comes after reports that Washington could use the islands as a pressure tool on the United Kingdom.
Trump stated he is "reviewing all positions" regarding British support, at a time of tension between the two traditional allied countries.
The central issue concerns defense spending. Washington wants the United Kingdom to increase its defense investments, and the Falkland Islands/Malvinas may be being used as a bargaining chip in these negotiations.
The United Kingdom thus faces simultaneous pressure from the United States and Argentina, which claims sovereignty over the islands, complicating its diplomatic and military position in the South Atlantic region.
