The joint committee analyzing the provisional measure (MP) on the end of the "blouse tax" postponed the vote on the text. Initially scheduled for this Monday, the committee was rescheduled for Tuesday. The committee chairman, congressman Reginaldo Lopes (PT-MG), said the time would be used to finalize the "last details" of the report.
The inclusion of the MP on this week's voting agenda came through a political agreement involving the leadership of the Legislative branch and the Palace of the Presidency. Maintaining the end of the 20% charge on international purchases of up to US$ 50 is one of the electoral platforms that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) intends to use in his re-election campaign.
The topic divided the Palace of the Presidency in 2024, pitting former Finance Minister Fernando Haddad against Minister Sidônio Palmeira, from the Secretariat for Social Communication of the Presidency (Secom). Given the assessment that charging this tax was politically harmful to Lula, the measure was adopted by the government.
