Housing launches public consultation on aid to create 1,525 affordable university housing units

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General31 August 2026 at 17:08

Spain's Ministry of Housing activated this Monday the public consultation process for the royal decree through which 45 million euros in subsidies will be granted to create at least 1,525 affordable university housing units. The objective is to finance the construction and adaptation of residences for students in seven different cities across Spain.

The measure is part of the government's policies to address the housing affordability crisis in the country, a problem that particularly affects young university students. The funds will be distributed among the selected municipalities to develop these housing projects at controlled prices.

The royal decree is now subject to the public consultation period, during which entities and citizens can submit observations and suggestions to the proposed text. Once this process is completed, the government will be able to proceed with the final approval and distribution of funds among the selected projects.

Government reserves R$ 44.8 billion for parliamentary amendments in 2027

The Lula government reserved R$ 44.8 billion for parliamentary amendments in the 2027 Annual Budget Bill (PLOA), an increase of R$ 4 billion compared to the proposal for 2026. The amount is expected to be higher after Congressional approval, since in 2026, R$ 40.8 billion was reserved, but the approved amount reached R$ 50 billion. Mandatory amendments are those the government is obligated to pay, while non-mandatory ones depend on available space in the Budget. There are three types of amendments: individual, from state delegations, and from committees, each with its own rules for distribution and application.
