José Manuel Freitas tears apart Benfica's number 20: "I never quite understood his role"

José Manuel Freitas criticized the use of Richard Ríos at Benfica, stating that he never understood what would be the best position for the Colombian midfielder at the club. The commentator recalled that Ríos had a predominant role at Palmeiras, under the command of Abel Ferreira, where the game went through him a lot, but that this dynamic did not repeat at the Luz.

Richard Ríos is increasingly closer to leaving Benfica during this transfer window. The player failed to secure a place in Marco Silva's starting eleven and has had reduced playing time, which could accelerate his departure from the club.

Freitas considered that one of the reasons for Ríos' difficulties is related to the lack of clarity regarding his best position in Benfica's playing system. The commentator suggested that Ríos could work as a right interior midfielder, but that he never managed to adapt to what the club intends to do in their football.

In José Manuel Freitas' opinion, Ríos also failed to keep up with the pace that Benfica demands, which contributed to his difficulties in establishing himself in the team.
