The National Electoral Commission of Guinea-Bissau announced a 50% turnout in the elections and declared "victory for yes" in the amendment to the country's Constitution. The official results indicate that the constitutional revision proposal was approved by the majority of voters who participated in the referendum.
The Guinean opposition, however, considers the referendum a "total failure." Opposition parties point to a maximum of 10% of popular participation, directly contradicting the numbers announced by the National Electoral Commission.
There is thus a large discrepancy between the official data and opposition estimates regarding the turnout rate in the constitutional referendum. This difference in interpretation of the results marks strong contestation by opposition forces against the democratic process.
