The Federal Public Ministry recommended to the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) the implementation of a Maria da Penha Patrol on campus, with the objective of preventing and combating violence against women. The proposal provides for the presence of the university security team on the main roads of the campus.
The recommendation was made by the Women's Promotion and Defense Center of the MPFT (Nudem) after a case of domestic violence involving a student of the institution. The case was recorded in February of this year, when the student's former partner was attacked with a sharp/blunt object in the vicinity of the campus.
Nudem requested that the UFPI administration evaluate the proposal together with the academic community. The university has not yet officially responded to the recommendation, which seeks to create protection mechanisms for women within the university environment.
The Maria da Penha Patrol is an initiative that already exists in other municipalities in Piauí and Brazil, with trained teams to work on the prevention of domestic and family violence against women, following the guidelines of the Maria da Penha Law.
