The coalitions PAI – Terra Ranka, API – Cabas Garandi and the Firkidja di Pubis movement classified Sunday's constitutional referendum in Guinea-Bissau as a "total failure," considering that turnout exceeding 90% translated into a rejection of the military regime. These opposition forces congratulated themselves on the "positive response to the boycott appeal" made to the popular consultation.
According to the opposition parties, voter turnout was below 10% in all regions of the country, resulting from the closure of "deserted" polling stations and the rejection of a process marked by "manifest lack of legitimacy," restrictions on public freedoms and the absence of independent oversight. In the opposite direction, the spokesperson for the National Election Commission, Idriça Djaló, announced participation above 50%.
Guinea-Bissau's military carried out a coup on November 26, 2025, one day before the publication of the results of the legislative and presidential elections, removed from power the then elected President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and had a new Constitution approved that reinforces the powers of the head of State. The new presidential and legislative elections were scheduled by the military for December 6.
The opposition coalitions warned that the regime may try to postpone the elections and warned that imposing a new Constitution would contribute to deepening the political and institutional crisis. The Firkidja di Pubis movement also asked ECOWAS, the African Union, CPLP, the UN and other international partners to draw the appropriate conclusions from the stance of the Guinean people.
