Viseu will commemorate on September 11 and 12 the 130 years since the birth of José de Azeredo Perdigão, with a commemorative session and a conference organized by BEIRA – Observatory of Contemporary Ideas Azeredo Perdigão, with support from the Municipality of Viseu. Azeredo Perdigão was born in Viseu in 1896 and played a decisive role in the creation and consolidation of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, an institution which he chaired for about four decades.
On the 11th, at 5:30 PM, at Viriato Teatro Municipal, the session "Azeredo Perdigão: A Viseu Native in the World" will take place, with a conversation between journalist Henrique Monteiro and historian Maria Fernanda Rollo, who coordinates a biographical research project on the presidents of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The program also includes musical moments from the Regional Conservatory of Music of Viseu Dr. José de Azeredo Perdigão and the Gulbenkian Choir, created in 1964 by Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão, Perdigão's wife.
On the following day, September 12, at 11:00 AM, at the Auditorium of the School of Technology and Management of Viseu, a special summer edition of the BEIRA conference cycle will be held, dedicated to the theme "The West, War and Peace". The main speaker is Nicole Gnesotto, a French historian and vice-president of the Institut Jacques Delors, who will reflect on the future of the West in a context marked by instability and new threats.
The debate will be complemented by a panel moderated by Henrique Monteiro, with Bruno Cardoso dos Reis, Raquel Vaz Pinto and Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, who will present perspectives on the transformation of the international order, current strategic and security challenges and possible paths for the future.
