The Greater Lisbon region contradicted the general trend of growth in tourism revenue in Portugal during the month of July, registering a year-on-year decline of 2% in sector revenue. This data contrasts with the positive performance observed in other regions of the country.
The decline in Lisbon's tourism revenue was mainly due to a drop in tourism originating from the United States, which represented a significant share of the international market in the Portuguese capital. The number of North American visitors was lower than that recorded in the same period of the previous year.
In contrast, the Algarve maintained its leading position regarding tourism revenue in Portugal. The southern region reached 923.7 million euros in July, which represented a growth of 4.9% compared to the same month of the previous year.
