European Union suspends imports of Brazilian meat starting Thursday

oglobo31 August 2026 at 22:53

The European Union will suspend starting Thursday the import of beef and poultry meat from Brazil, the European Commission announced this Monday (31), which is awaiting Brazilian guarantees regarding compliance with the bloc's sanitary standards. The suspension of Brazilian imports also covers eggs and honey.

At this time, the European Commission reproaches Brazil for not having presented sufficient guarantees regarding the conformity of its products with European rules against the abusive use of antibiotics in the livestock industry. Brussels did not want to provide a schedule for the resumption of imports.

A spokesperson for the European Executive told AFP that Brazil is an important partner of the EU and that they are working closely, in a constructive and positive manner, with Brazilian authorities to ensure compliance with European requirements. According to her, once such compliance is demonstrated, exports to the EU may be resumed.
