Algarvian Yolanda Hopkins defeats ranking leader and advances to quarterfinals at Fiji Pro

Algarvian surfer Yolanda Hopkins secured this Sunday a spot in the quarterfinals of the Fiji Pro, the eighth stage of the main circuit of the World Surf League, after eliminating Hawaiian Gabriela Bryan, the current world ranking leader. The match took place at Cloudbreak, in the second round of the competition.

Hopkins scored 10.17 points, distributed in 5.50 and 4.67, surpassing Bryan's 9.93 points, who had been exempt from the first elimination round. This was Hopkins' second victory in the competition, after previously eliminating French surfer Tya Zebrowski.

In the quarterfinals, Yolanda Hopkins will face Australian Isabella Nichols or Spanish Nadia Erostabe. Also Portuguese Francisca Veselko, who defeated Australian Tyler Wright in the first round, will face American Lakey Peterson in the second round.

The next stage of the Championship Tour will be the Lexus Trestles Pro in the United States, between September 11 and 20, followed by the stop in Peniche, Portugal, between October 22 and November 1.
