The Day Dona Neuma Stood Up to Bill Clinton

The story of Dona Neuma, the eternal first lady of samba at Mangueira, has become a book organized by researchers José Leonídio Pereira and André Freire. One of the most striking stories is about when Bill Clinton visited the Mangueira Olympic Village in 1997: the American delegation considered measures such as suspending the trains and keeping residents inside their homes. Dona Neuma reacted with this line: "Respect or the absence of the American president." Clinton went to Mangueira, Jamelão sang "A Voz do Morro," and according to the book, he left there "happier than a chick in the trash."
