Hungary has created a new high-level anti-corruption body, called the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office (NVVH). This organization has investigators tasked with recovering state assets that were diverted during the Orbán era, functioning as a dedicated authority for asset recovery.
The investigators of this new body also have powers to file legal charges against suspects involved in cases of public funds embezzlement. This dual competence allows the entity not only to track and recover assets but also to bring those responsible to justice.
Political scientist Anna Róza Unger was selected by the Hungarian parliament to lead this new authority. She was chosen from a shortlist of three candidates, demonstrating a selection process that involved evaluating multiple options before the final appointment.
