Minister Márcio Elias Rosa, of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC), is expected to meet on Monday (31) with the trade representative of the United States, Jamieson Greer. The meeting is scheduled for 2:30 PM, Brasília time, and will be held virtually.
The meeting aims to continue discussions on the tariff hikes imposed by the United States. The Brazilian government intends, initially, to expand the list of products exempt from surcharges of up to 37.5%. In a later stage, the intention is to discuss reversing the measures adopted by the US.
The negotiation comes after a phone call between Presidents Lula and Donald Trump, which took place two weeks ago and lasted about 1 hour and 20 minutes. During the conversation, the two heads of state discussed the tariffs imposed by the United States, among other topics.
The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) recommended the application of two additional tariffs on Brazilian products. The first of these added 2% on a series of products, among other products that were not detailed in the article.
