Pedro Sánchez accused Isabel Díaz Ayuso of wanting to buy a luxury apartment with the money of Madrid taxpayers. The Spanish prime minister said textually: "This lady wanted to buy a penthouse with the money of the people of Madrid and was caught".
The controversy involves the purchase of a property by the Community of Madrid. According to the regional Executive, the property was to house presidential offices during renovations at the Puerta de Sol building.
Sánchez made these statements referring directly to Ayuso, at a time when the purchase is being questioned and investigated. The case has generated a strong political dispute between the central government and the government of the Community of Madrid.
