"This government will not proceed with negotiations": Iceland rejects resumption of EU accession process

Now31 August 2026 at 09:20

Iceland held a referendum on the resumption of EU accession negotiations, with voters rejecting the proposal with 52.8% of votes against.

The EU accession process had been previously suspended, and this referendum represented a new opportunity to assess national interest in resuming talks with Brussels.

Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, who recently took office, has already stated that her government will not proceed with the accession process during the current term, thus respecting the will expressed by the majority of the population.

This result reflects Iceland's continued hesitation to join the European Union, an issue that has been debated in the Nordic country recurrently in recent decades.
