Han Hak-ja, leader of the Unification Church, was sentenced on Friday to two years in prison for bribery and other violations related to political financing in South Korea. The decision was issued by a court in Seoul and involved the delivery of gifts to the country's then first lady, Kim Keon Hee, wife of deposed President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The gifts delivered were two Chanel bags and a diamond necklace, with a combined value of 80 million won, equivalent to approximately US$57,900, or about R$300,000 at current exchange rates. According to the sentence, the items were given in exchange for favors, which characterizes the crime of bribery.
Han Hak-ja, 83, is the widow of the founder of the religious organization, Sun Myung Moon. The leader of the Unification Church repeatedly denied the accusations, calling them "false." A special team of prosecutors was responsible for investigating the case.
