The oceanfront road was temporarily closed to vehicle traffic this weekend, in an experimental measure implemented by the local council. The decision had as its main objective guaranteeing the safety of pedestrians who use that coastal road, especially during periods of greatest traffic.
The council justified the initiative as part of a broader strategy for promoting sustainable mobility in the region. During the closure, citizens could freely circulate on foot or by bicycle along the road normally intended for motor traffic.
The measure, however, generated strong division of opinions among residents and users of the oceanfront. While some supporters celebrated the possibility of enjoying the space in a safer and more peaceful way, others expressed concern about the inconveniences caused by the traffic interruption, namely in terms of accessibility and travel times.
The local authorities indicated that they will analyze the impact of this pilot experience before deciding if the measure will be implemented again in the future, taking into account both the benefits for sustainable mobility and the needs of those who depend on the car to get around the area.
