TAP closes first half with losses of almost 100 million pressured by fuel costs

Euronews Portugal31 August 2026 at 08:46

TAP closed the first half of the year with losses of almost 100 million euros, according to the results announced by the Portuguese airline. The negative net result represents a setback compared to the same period the previous year.

The company saw its results pressured mainly by the increase in fuel costs, which had a significant impact on the airline's finances during the first six months of the year.

Despite the negative net result, TAP achieved operational improvements in the period. The company increased revenues by 4% compared to the same period the previous year, demonstrating the ability to generate more operating revenue.

Additionally, the Portuguese airline achieved a positive milestone by transporting a record number of passengers in the first six months of the year, showing that demand for TAP's services remained high despite the financial challenges faced by the company.

NEAFC Measures to Combat Unsustainable Russian Mackerel Fishing Enter into Force

Measures adopted by the Northeast Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) to combat unsustainable Russian mackerel fishing, proposed by the European Union, have entered into force. Russia unilaterally increased its quota to 67,548 tonnes in 2026, and NEAFC responded by establishing a limit of 1,495 tonnes for Russian catches in international waters. The measure prohibits members from facilitating unsustainable fishing, including transshipments and refueling of Russian vessels above the quota. The EU, the United Kingdom, and Iceland are also applying restrictions within their national jurisdictions, denying port entry to vessels with excess Russian catches. The European Commission emphasizes that additional efforts are needed to recover mackerel stocks, calling for the extension of restrictions and a ban on at-sea transshipments.
