TAP breaks record for passengers and revenues but closes first half with a loss of 99.2 million

dnoticias.pt31 August 2026 at 08:03

TAP transported 8.2 million passengers in the first half of 2026, representing a 4.2% growth compared to the same period the previous year. The Portuguese airline also achieved record operating revenues of 2,039.8 million euros during this period.

Despite the increase in demand and record revenues, TAP closed the first six months of the year with a negative net result of 99.2 million euros. This loss contrasts with the company's positive operational performance.

The negative result was strongly influenced by rising fuel costs, which significantly impacted the airline's profitability during the first half. This external factor ended up neutralizing the gains made from business growth.

During the period under analysis, TAP operated 57.5 thousand flights, representing a 0.3% increase compared to the first half of the previous year.

Fund to diversify Macau's economy may invest in foreign companies

The Macau government announced that an 11 billion pataca (1.17 billion euros) fund, created to diversify the local economy, will be open to investing in foreign companies. The Executive Council of the Chinese semi-autonomous region concluded the management rules for the Government Guidance Fund, created at the end of February, which aims to encourage local employment and the development of qualified personnel. The Executive Council spokesperson, Wong Sio Chak, emphasized that the fund will invest in companies that contribute to Macau's development. The manager of the Macau Investment and Management Company (MIMC) stated that there will be mechanisms for mandatory withdrawal of public investment in cases of contractual non-compliance or corruption. The fund could represent an opportunity for companies from Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Portugal, Brazil, and African nations with Portuguese as an official language, which share know-how in priority sectors such as innovation and industrial modernization.

The article analyzes the relationship between news and financial markets, explaining that good news can make markets fall and bad news can make them rise. The key lies in what the price had already discounted before the news was published — that is, collective psychology and pre-existing expectations determine the market's reaction, not the literal content of the news itself.

Attention taxpayers: the deadline to pay this tax is ending and ignoring it can end up much more expensive

Portuguese taxpayers have until this Monday to settle the final IRS (income tax) adjustment for 2025 income, this being also the deadline for the Tax Authority to complete the payment of refunds. The IRS campaign took place between April and June, with the Tax Authority having until July 31 to verify declarations and issue assessments, giving taxpayers one month to regularize any amounts owed. The result can result in a refund, additional payment, or no adjustment, depending on applicable withholdings, income, and deductions. The law provides that amounts under 25 euros will not be collected and, if refunds are not processed within the deadline, the Tax Authority is required to pay interest to the taxpayer.
