Far from the initial goal, Portugal will have 171 places in September in centers for migrants

RTP Notícias31 August 2026 at 08:10

The Portuguese Government announced to RTP Antena 1 that by September there will be 171 places available in temporary installation centers for migrants who are in an irregular situation in the country. This number represents a capacity lower than initially planned.

The original goal of the Executive was to provide 300 places through two temporary installation centers. However, the established goal was not met, falling short of what was planned.

The centers are intended for the reception of migrants in illegal situations in Portugal, functioning as passing spaces while the legal procedures related to each case are carried out.

The executive did not specify the reasons that led to the reduction in the number of places in relation to the initial planning, nor if there are plans to increase the capacity of these centers in the near future.

Iran: Trump posts AI-generated video showing destruction of Iranian island of Kharg

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, shared an artificial intelligence-generated video on the social media platform Truth Social, showing the simulated destruction of the Iranian island of Kharg, Iran's main oil terminal. The post came hours after a US attack on Larak island in the Strait of Hormuz, which aimed to destroy rockets and sea mines belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. In retaliation, Iran attacked bases in Jordan, although the missiles were intercepted. Kharg island, which concentrates most of Iran's oil exports, has been targeted by Trump's threats since the beginning of the conflict between the US and Israel against Iran.
