Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced on Sunday that he intends to reinstate the death penalty for arsonists, following devastating wildfires that hit the north and east of the country. At a meeting with the Justice Minister dedicated to the emergency situation, Tebboune ordered that an amendment to the Penal Code be presented by September 15.
Although the death penalty is legal in Algeria, there has been a moratorium in effect since 1993. The president stated that the bill must first be submitted to the government and then quickly analyzed by Parliament. Tebboune insisted that the execution will be carried out as soon as the convicted exhaust all legal appeals.
