The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a red "great danger" alert for storms expected to hit Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina this Monday, August 31. The alert covers several regions, including Serrana, Western Santa Catarina, Itajaí Valley, Northwestern Rio-grandense, Greater Florianópolis, Southern Santa Catarina, Northeastern Rio-grandense, and part of Northern Santa Catarina.

The rains should hit areas ranging from the south-central and western regions of Paraná to southern Rio Grande do Sul. The forecast scenario includes thunderstorms, storms, and possible hail, with an overcast sky in southern Paraná, Santa Catarina, and north-central Rio Grande do Sul, including the capital Porto Alegre.

Meanwhile, intense heat should prevail in areas of the Central-West and Southeast of Brazil. The instability in the South region contrasts with the high temperatures recorded in the other regions of the country during this late August period.
