Cypriot authorities detained the captain and crew of the high-speed catamaran that shipwrecked off the northern coast of Cyprus. The vessel, named "Filojet", was carrying 267 people on board and sank to a depth of more than 500 meters. Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
The shipwreck occurred when the ferry was caught in a storm. So far, eight deaths have been confirmed, but authorities fear the death toll may be higher than already announced.
Rescue operations are continuing in the deep waters where the vessel sank, in an area of difficult access. Authorities are making every effort to locate possible survivors and victims.
