EU says it respects Iceland's "no" and identifies country as "one of the closest and most trusted partners"

SIC Notícias30 August 2026 at 18:14

The European Union expressed respect for Iceland's decision to reject, in a referendum, resuming negotiations for accession to the bloc. The European executive classified the Nordic country as "one of the closest and most trusted partners".

Iceland's prime minister responded to the EU's position and considered that the referendum result represents "a victory for democracy", rejecting the characterization of the vote as "a setback".

The referendum in Iceland took place on the possibility of resuming accession negotiations with the European Union, with the population voting against this possibility.
