There is a shortage of fishermen on the island of Madeira

RTP Notícias30 August 2026 at 14:40

Shortage of fishermen on the island of Madeira. This is the main problem affecting the fishing sector in the region, creating a paradoxical situation in the archipelago.

In recent fishing quota negotiations, the Azores and Madeira achieved a significant increase, securing an additional 500 tonnes of bigeye tuna for their fleets.

However, despite this gain in quotas, the Madeiran fishing industry faces difficulties in taking advantage of this increase due to the shortage of labour in the sector.

The situation illustrates a growing challenge for the region: while fishing opportunities are expanding, the lack of available professionals to work at sea limits the capacity to exploit these resources.
