Campeão das Províncias30 August 2026 at 13:36

The renovation and expansion project of the former Covões Library, intended for the installation of a Family Health Unit, is in the final stages of completion, representing an investment of 614,454 euros. Currently, the USF continues to operate in the Casa do Povo building, in the centre of the parish of Covões, a space that does not offer adequate conditions and presents difficulties in terms of traffic circulation, parking and accessibility.

The change of location will allow the expansion of the building and the increase of the response capacity, going from approximately 3,600 to 5,400 users. The intervention covers several essential areas for the modernization and functionality of the space.

In a first phase, preliminary work and necessary demolitions were carried out, followed by the execution of foundations and structures. In the architectural component, the intervention included the construction of walls, carpentry, metalwork, coverings, paintings and installation of sanitary equipment.

Externally, landscaping works, paving and drainage systems were carried out. The infrastructure was also reinforced with new electrical installations, water supply and drainage networks, as well as mechanical systems for air conditioning, ventilation and fire safety. The space is also being equipped with benches and upper cabinets to ensure better conditions of functionality and comfort.

Does a lease continue after the landlord's death? Portuguese law may surprise you

In Portugal, the death of the landlord does not, by itself, determine the end of the lease contract. When the property belonged to the deceased in full ownership, the heirs assume the position of landlord and must respect all original contract conditions, including the rent amount and the agreed term. However, there is an important exception: if the landlord was merely a usufructuary of the property, the usufruct is extinguished upon their death, which may cause the contract to lapse under Article 1051 of the Civil Code. Recent rulings from the Porto and Lisbon Courts of Appeal clarified that the analysis should focus on the signatory's status when the contract was originally entered into, not just the situation at the time of death. Even in cases of lapse, the owner can only demand delivery of the property six months after the event that caused it.
