Six out of ten second-hand cars sold in Spain are over 15 years old

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General30 August 2026 at 13:01

The used vehicle market in Spain is characterized by the high age of available cars. A study prepared by CARFAX, based on almost five million cars corresponding to the best-selling models in the first half of 2026, revealed that 61% of transferred used cars exceed 15 years of age.

This value exceeds the national vehicle fleet average by ten percentage points, which stands at 51%. This means that six out of every ten second-hand cars sold in Spain are more than a decade and a half old.

The CARFAX study analyzed only the best-selling models in the Spanish market during the mentioned period, which provides a representative picture of current trends in the purchase and sale of used vehicles in the country.

Spain: Diesel discount rises to 20 cents per liter starting Tuesday

In Spain, the diesel discount will rise to 20 cents per liter starting Tuesday, after this fuel registered a price increase of 15.7% in July, which automatically triggered a safeguard clause provided for in the decree-law that reformed the fiscal aid for fuels. This clause establishes that, if diesel inflation exceeds 15%, an expanded discount of 20 cents per liter is activated. On the other hand, the gasoline discount will be reduced from 10 to 5 cents per liter, since this fuel only became 7.3% more expensive in July, well below the 15% threshold that would trigger additional measures.

Fuel prices – Week of August 31 to September 6, 2026

During the week of August 31 to September 6, 2026, an increase of approximately 1.5 cents per liter in gasoline prices and a decrease of approximately 7.5 cents per liter in diesel prices are expected in Portugal. The average price of diesel, which was at 2.071 euros per liter on the previous Friday, is expected to drop to 1.996 euros, while gasoline will rise from 1.989 to 2.004 euros per liter. Variations may differ between fuel stations due to sector liberalization. The changes are attributed to the conflict in the Middle East, involving the USA, Israel and Iran, which led to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of world oil and natural gas trade passes, causing fluctuations in fuel prices in Europe.
