Fuel prices – Week of August 31 to September 6, 2026

Jornal de Mafra30 August 2026 at 13:17

From August 31, 2026, fuel prices in Portugal are expected to undergo significant changes. According to industry sources, gasoline prices are expected to increase by approximately 1.5 cents per liter, while diesel prices are expected to decrease by approximately 7.5 cents per liter. On Friday, August 28, the average price of diesel was at 2.071 euros per liter and gasoline at 1.989 euros per liter.

If the forecasts are confirmed, the average price of diesel will fall to 1.996 euros per liter, while gasoline increases to 2.004 euros per liter. However, there may be fuel stations with less significant price variations, since the sector is liberalized and each station applies its own pricing policy.

The increase in fuel prices results from the current context of war in the Middle East, involving the United States, Israel and Iran in military attacks in the region. This conflict led to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of world oil and natural gas trade passes.

As a consequence of this blockade, there are strong fluctuations in fuel prices in Europe and, naturally, in Portugal, directly affecting consumers and the national economy.

Spain: Diesel discount rises to 20 cents per liter starting Tuesday

In Spain, the diesel discount will rise to 20 cents per liter starting Tuesday, after this fuel registered a price increase of 15.7% in July, which automatically triggered a safeguard clause provided for in the decree-law that reformed the fiscal aid for fuels. This clause establishes that, if diesel inflation exceeds 15%, an expanded discount of 20 cents per liter is activated. On the other hand, the gasoline discount will be reduced from 10 to 5 cents per liter, since this fuel only became 7.3% more expensive in July, well below the 15% threshold that would trigger additional measures.
