New boardwalk connects Praia Verde Lago to Praia Verde and reinforces protection of the dune cordon

Jornal do Algarve30 August 2026 at 13:02

The new section of boardwalk connecting Praia Verde Lago, in Altura, to Praia Verde, in the municipality of Castro Marim, was opened to the public on Friday, August 21. The structure integrated into the Dune Cordon Safeguard Structure extends from Ribeira do Álamo to Praia Verde, with the aim of protecting the dune system and improving access to the beaches.

The route includes an elevated section, designed to facilitate access for emergency and rescue vehicles to the beach, allowing for reduced response times for security forces and emergency services. Lighting along the new section is also planned. The Municipality of Castro Marim highlighted that the solution improves access conditions and minimizes disturbances to the ecosystem, reducing dune trampling and favoring dune recovery.

The boardwalk construction resulted from a public-private partnership associated with a tender promoted by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), in partnership with the Municipality of Castro Marim. The execution of the structure was carried out by a promoter who will also build a new beach support facility at Praia Verde Lago, equipped with sanitary facilities.

The intervention takes place in an area under APA jurisdiction and falls within the shared competencies between the entities involved. The municipality states that the intervention respects the objectives defined for the management of the Algarve coastline, whose management, inspection, and planning are the responsibility of the APA.

Russia promises more attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructures

Russia announced on Sunday, August 30, that it is preparing "massive attacks" against Ukraine's energy sector infrastructures, in response to Kiev's continued attacks on civilian facilities and the Russian oil complex. During last winter, Moscow had already devastated Ukraine's energy sector, leaving millions of people without electricity and heating. Ceasefire negotiations remain stalled since the United States became involved in the war against Iran, in February, with contacts between Russians and Ukrainians limited to the exchange of war prisoners and soldiers' bodies.
