100 years ago, on August 31, the island of Faial, in the Azores, was hit by a devastating earthquake that caused the collapse of more than 4,000 houses. The seismic shock had an estimated magnitude between 5.3 and 5.9 on the Richter scale.
As a result of the disaster, nine people lost their lives following the earthquake. The episode represents one of the most tragic moments in the history of the island of Faial.
