These projects frequently face significant delays in relation to the initially promised timelines, which has been a recurring characteristic of this type of large-scale construction.

Despite the high costs and timeline issues, these tunnels promise to revolutionize railway travel on the European continent, making it more efficient and faster.

The defenders of these projects argue that, besides improving mobility, these infrastructures could significantly contribute to boosting the European economy.

According to official data from December 2024, the average old-age pension in Portugal was 786.17 euros for men and 452.09 euros for women under the general Social Security scheme, a difference of 334.08 euros monthly. This disparity, which persists across all age groups, reflects inequalities accumulated throughout working life, such as lower wages, shorter careers, and work interruptions, mainly among older generations. Among new pensions awarded in 2024, the difference was about 305 euros, lower than the overall average, which may indicate a positive evolution. Social Security itself explains that the calculation rules are identical for both sexes, but are based on individual contributory careers that differ, with the female statutory pension (270.10 euros) being less than half the male one (615.74 euros).
