More than 161 thousand Brazilians live legally in Spain

Agência Incomparáveis30 August 2026 at 10:51

More than 161 thousand Brazilians live legally in Spain, according to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The movement occurs amid rules that allow foreign students to work up to 30 hours per week and remote professionals to apply for residence through the digital nomad visa.

Data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) show 6,657 grants of Spanish nationality by residence to Brazilians in the last reported year, the highest number in the mentioned series.

Brazilians have a shorter residence requirement to apply for Spanish nationality than foreigners of many other nationalities. Because they belong to the group of citizens of Ibero-American countries, they can make the request after two continuous years of legal residence. For foreigners subject to the general rule, the period is ten years.

Among the residence possibilities are authorizations related to studies and remote work. The granting of authorizations depends on meeting the requirements of each category, including financial proof, documentation about remuneration and service provision contracts, as well as enrollment in a recognized educational institution for applications linked to studies.
