Two babies were recently born in the Alto Alentejo with the intervention of firefighters. The first case occurred in the Estremoz area, where a child was born at home, with firefighters providing assistance during the birth.
The second birth took place in the municipality of Monforte. In this case, the mother gave birth in an ambulance, during transport to a health facility. The situation was due to the closure of the nearest maternity service in that region.
These episodes highlight the difficulties that many populations in the interior of the Alentejo face in accessing maternal healthcare. The lack of local services forces many expectant mothers to travel long distances to receive care.
The Voluntary Firefighters of Monforte were the responders in the second case, having performed the birth in the ambulance. Health authorities have not yet commented on these occurrences.
