Nepal: Risk of new floods from dammed lake overflow decreases, according to local authorities

Nepalese authorities reported that the immediate risk of new floods caused by the overflow of a dammed lake on the border with Tibet has decreased. The lake was formed by the accumulation of debris in a river after a sudden avalanche hit the border between Nepal and Tibet last Wednesday (26).

The dammed lake reached overflow levels on Friday (28), which interrupted rescue operations in the region. Rescue teams resumed their activities when the immediate risk caused by the flood was considered "controllable."

Local authorities say the lake is gradually draining, which reduces the risk of a new flood. According to a spokesperson for the Third Engineering Office of China Aneng Group, the water level dropped about 10 meters compared to the level recorded on Thursday (27). The statement was given to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
