GNR alerts for "fake accidents" scams. Losses for victims already exceed 72 thousand euros

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) issued an alert for scams involving so-called "fake accidents." This type of scam consists of deceiving victims by making them believe they caused a traffic accident and must compensate the allegedly affected person.

Between January and June, the GNR recorded 30 complaints related to this type of scam. The financial losses suffered by victims of this scheme already exceed 72 thousand euros.

Authorities are warning the population to be alert to suspicious situations, especially when approached by strangers claiming compensation for accidents that allegedly occurred. The GNR recommends that, if any suspicion arises, the emergency line or the nearest police station should be contacted.

The GNR warned about the increase in scams through the simulation of traffic accidents in Portugal, with 30 complaints registered in the first half of 2026, 15.4% more than in the same period in 2025. The losses already amount to 72,540 euros, almost matching the 77,480 euros from the entire previous year. The highest amount from a single scam reached 15,450 euros. The district of Faro leads with six cases, followed by Lisbon with four, and Porto, Viseu, Beja, Santarém and Coimbra with three cases each.
