Politics is over for Marques Mendes

ZAP Notícias27 August 2026 at 11:00

Luís Marques Mendes declared that his phase in politics is over, acknowledging that he sometimes enjoyed it more than others, although he doesn't rule out returning to political commentary. In February 2025, Marques Mendes presented his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic, appearing as one of the main rivals of Gouveia e Melo, who was considered the strongest candidate. Over the following months, the two dominated the presidential polls, with Marques Mendes even appearing ahead at times, until the end of the year, in a race that would culminate in the first round of elections in January 2026. Between the two candidates there were tense and unfriendly exchanges.
