Operation Teia reached the courthouse with the beginning of the trial of former mayors from the municipalities of Santo Tirso and Barcelos. The defendants chose to remain silent during the initial phase of the process, not making statements about the charges against them.
The crimes at the center of this case include misconduct, aggravated active and passive corruption, economic participation in business and embezzlement. The authorities investigated for months the alleged illicit schemes involving the former municipal officials.
The two municipalities in the Porto district are the main locations of the alleged criminal practices. Operation Teia results from an in-depth investigation that identified suspected undue favoritism and illegal economic benefits during the mandates of the mayors now on trial.
