The Civil Police arrested three members of a criminal association suspected of running the fake winning lottery ticket scam in Rio's South Zone. The arrest happened on Monday (14th), in Copacabana. According to the investigation, the group approached mainly elderly people on the streets of the region and convinced them to hand over money, jewelry, or make bank transfers in exchange for supposedly winning lottery tickets.
The case that originated the investigation happened on September 2nd. An elderly woman was walking through Gávea when she was approached by a couple who claimed to have a winning ticket worth R$10 million. The suspects said they couldn't withdraw the prize due to religious reasons and offered the ticket to the victim for R$60,000.
The elderly woman ended up losing the R$60,000 in the scam. The couple accompanied the victim to her residence and convinced her to make the bank transfers. Police identified the three suspects and served the preventive detention warrants.
