Elderly people were buying kitchen robots, vacuum cleaners and mattresses. Then they were forced to hand over their homes to pay off debts

CNN Portugal15 September 2026 at 20:03

A mass fraud network targeting elderly people was dismantled in Spain. The scammers sold door-to-door household and security products, such as kitchen robots, vacuum cleaners and mattresses, taking advantage of morning hours when family members were at work and could not accompany the elderly.

The salespeople gained the trust of the elderly and created in them the need to make these purchases. After the sales, the elderly were left with high debts they could not pay, and were later forced to hand over their homes to settle the financial commitments.

The operation specifically targeted elderly people, exploiting their vulnerability and isolation during the day, when they did not have the support or supervision of family members to prevent hasty financial decisions.

Why this matters

This mass fraud operation against the elderly is relevant because it exposes the vulnerability of older people to aggressive and fraudulent commercial practices. Family members of elderly people should be alert to salespeople visiting their loved ones during hours when they are absent, warning them about the risks of pressure buying and the handover of assets as guarantee for debts.
