Derek Parker Aghnaanga, 15, survived for three days on an overturned boat in the icy waters of Alaska, United States. The teenager was rescued after drifting in the Bering Sea with the boat inverted. The young man's mother, Vina Kulowiyi, said he survived without food or water, praying all the time throughout the ordeal.
The minor had gone fishing for halibut on September 4 accompanied by his brother Sidney Kulowiyi, 35, and his cousin Barton Rookok, 34. According to the survivor's aunt, Colleen Walker, Derek tried to hold the bodies of his brother and cousin for as long as possible after both drowned. When rescued, the teenager muttered that his brother's corpse was still trapped under the boat.
The accident occurred when a fishing line became entangled in the small boat's gear, causing it to capsize near St. Lawrence Island. The boat drifted in the Bering Sea until rescue arrived.
