Nature festival travels through Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António

Postal do Algarve15 September 2026 at 18:20

The Algarve Nature Fest returns between September 25 and 27 with an edition focused on Ria Formosa, promoted by Turismo do Algarve. For the first time, activities are distributed across the five municipalities that make up this territory: Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. The festival proposes three days of contact with nature, with experiences designed to bring residents and visitors closer to the biodiversity, landscapes, and natural and cultural heritage of the region.

The edition takes place at a time when the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve ranks 10th in the ranking of the best European destinations for birdwatching in 2026, compiled from 115 internationally recognized sites. The study highlights the possibility of observing more than 200 species in a single day and the regular presence of more than 20,000 waterfowl during winter.

On September 26 and 27, the public can participate in free activities such as interpretive hikes, cycling tours, canoeing, birdwatching and boat trips. The initiatives take place at different points across the five municipalities and are subject to prior booking. On September 25, 25 sessions for 512 students from the five municipalities begin, a program focused on knowledge of biodiversity and environmental awareness through direct contact with Ria Formosa.

The edition also includes a fam trip with international operators, a press trip integrated into the "Internacionalizar + Algarve 3.0 – Algarve 2030" project, and a B2B meeting on September 26 between international operators and Algarve tourism businesses. The president of Turismo do Algarve, André Gomes, highlights that the goal is to provide new ways to discover the territory and showcase this wealth to international markets, transforming knowledge of the territory into new opportunities for promotion and business.

Why this matters

Residents and visitors to the Algarve have access to three days of free outdoor activities that allow them to discover the biodiversity of Ria Formosa, while local tourism businesses benefit from a B2B meeting with international operators to create partnerships and diversify demand. The international recognition of Ria Formosa as an excellent birdwatching destination reinforces the region's potential for nature tourism throughout the year.
