PS asks Government for documents and list of personalities involved in the purchase of 13.7% of REN

Jornal de Negócios15 September 2026 at 17:21

The Socialist Party asked the Government to make available the documents and the list of personalities involved in the purchase of 13.7% of REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais). The request comes at a time of debate about the conditions of the operation.

Deputy Marcos Perestrello, from the PS, harshly criticized the value paid by the State in this transaction. According to the parliamentarian, the Executive is paying almost double the value at which the last REN stake was sold in 2014.

Perestrello considered it particularly serious that the final price includes a bonus that he considered unjustified, exceeding 50 million euros destined for the selling shareholder. This accusation raises questions about the terms of the negotiation.

Why this matters

The PS's request for documentation comes following a financial operation considered questionable by the social democrats, who accuse the Executive of having paid an excessive value for the 13.7% of REN. Taxpayers may be bearing a cost higher than necessary, with an alleged bonus of more than 50 million euros included in the price. This matter may have political implications for the Government and raises questions about the transparency of the processes for purchasing state stakes.
