The trial of former priest Humberto Gama is taking place behind closed doors at the Bragança court, where today's final arguments took place. The Public Prosecutor requested a six-year sentence in cumulative terms for the defendant, while the defense lawyer requested the acquittal of the former priest.
The crime of sexual coercion, for which the former priest was also accused, fell after the alleged victim refused to testify and withdrew the complaint. Humberto Gama also faces charges of qualified fraud, usurpation of functions in continued form and rape.
The former priest stated upon leaving the court that he feels "calm" since the first day of the trial and denied all the crimes he is accused of. "I believe justice will be done," he declared to journalists.
The verdict in this case is scheduled for September 30.
