The Association of Guard Professionals (APG/GNR) announced that the Guard training course that was taking place in Portalegre was interrupted due to a bedbug plague in the facilities of the Training Center. The association revealed it had received several reports about the situation and advocates for the relocation of the center due to lack of conditions.
APG/GNR states that trainees have been sleeping in temporary containers for about 30 years, in bunk beds where 20 people share a room, without any type of air conditioning. In addition to bedbugs, the association has also received reports of the existence of cockroaches in the facilities.
The association warns that more than 400 trainees are at stake and considers the situation a matter of public health. The current GNR Training Center in Portalegre is installed in the Convent of São Bernardo, under a protocol between the Ministries of Defence and Internal Administration, although the construction of new facilities in the city's industrial zone on land ceded by the municipality is planned.
APG/GNR urges the Government to take urgent measures to ensure the resumption of the course and find solutions that respect the dignity and health of the trainees. GNR was contacted by the news agency but deferred comments for later.
