Figueira da Foz reinvents heritage through art

Campeão das Províncias15 September 2026 at 15:46

The European Heritage Days take place in Figueira da Foz between September 18 and 27, organized by the Municipal Department of Culture. This year, the event has the theme "Revive, resist, reinvent" and coincides with the commemoration of the 144th anniversary of the elevation of Figueira da Foz to city status. The program includes workshops, exhibitions, urban interventions and guided tours, seeking to show that heritage can be reinterpreted and enriched by community participation.

The Municipal Museum Santos Rocha hosts, from September 18 to 26, the workshops "The Coat of Arms of Figueira da Foz", where children, young people and families can discover the symbols of local identity starting from the coat of arms reproduced in Portuguese cobblestone near the City Hall. On September 19, the Image Quarter hosts the workshop "PA-TRI-MÓ-NIO", a partnership with FlagranteTítulo – Cultural Association, where photographs from the archive and the Sala Figueirense are worked through drawing and graphic composition.

On September 20, the anniversary of the elevation to city status, two important moments take place. At 3:00 PM, the Municipal Museum opens "Geometries of Stone — Portuguese Cobblestone", an exhibition by photographer Bruno Veiga that reveals patterns and forms hidden in the Portuguese cobblestone of Figueira. Two hours later, Carlos Hypart presents the urban art intervention "Stones Uplifted" at Esplanada Silva Guimarães, transporting traditional motifs to a contemporary language.

On September 26, the encounter "Urban Sketchers — Drawing Heritage" takes place, developed with Montemor Sketchers, combining guided tours and observational drawing at Paço de Maiorca during the morning and at Casa do Paço during the afternoon.

Why this matters

Residents of Figueira da Foz have access to a week of free cultural activities, including workshops for children and families that explore local identity through art. The event also marks the 144th anniversary of the city's elevation, offering an opportunity to rediscover historical heritage through new artistic languages and interventions in public space.
