One third of the Portuguese population aged 15 or over consumed non-prescribed medication in 2025, representing 33.2% of the total, according to data from the 2025 National Health Survey (INS 2025) released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

This practice is more frequent among young people, especially in the age group of 15 to 34 years, where the consumption of medication without prescription exceeds that of prescribed drugs. In particular, 38.6% of people between 25 and 34 years old resorted to this practice.

The Algarve region registers a prevalence higher than the national average in the consumption of medication without medical prescription.

José Apolinário defends a regional chapter in European funds 2028-2034
