Almost half of doctors in Brazilian ICUs show high level of 'burnout,' study shows

oglobo15 September 2026 at 15:00

Almost half (48.5%) of doctors working in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in Brazil show high levels of mental and emotional exhaustion, according to a recent study.

The analysis involved 2,338 doctors who answered digital questionnaires distributed across 26 Brazilian states plus the Federal District. The research identified that almost eight in every ten ICU professionals need attention to their emotional health.

The study points out that exhaustion is one of the risk factors for a burnout diagnosis, as well as depersonalization (becoming emotionally distant from work as a defense mechanism) and dissatisfaction with life.

In addition to the 48.5% with high exhaustion, 31.2% of doctors showed moderate exhaustion, while 20.3% had low exhaustion. The research also highlights what was identified as "low degree of satisfaction with their activities."

Why this matters

The research reveals a serious mental health problem among Brazilian intensivist doctors, which can compromise the quality of care in ICUs across the country. Patients and families are indirectly affected by exhausted professionals, and the health system itself faces risks with the deterioration of the medical workforce. The study serves as a warning for the need for psychological support policies for health professionals.

When to worry about numbness and tingling: specialist explains neuropathy and other causes

Most people experience occasional numbness or tingling, usually due to temporary pressure on a nerve when sitting, standing, or sleeping in certain positions. However, these symptoms may indicate more serious medical conditions, such as neuropathy, according to Dr. Megan Everson, a neurosurgeon and spine specialist at Mayo Clinic. The specialist explains that symptoms occur when a nerve is damaged, compressed, or irritated, or when it is not functioning properly, indicating neuropathy. In other cases, pressure on nerves in the spine or other points in the body may cause these sensations, requiring medical evaluation.
