"Fruit Heroes" Project Raises Daily Fruit and Vegetable Consumption to 98.8% Among STUDENTS in Castelo Branco District Schools

A study by the Institute of Environmental Health of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (ISAMB/FMUL) and the Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity (APCOI) showed that the "Fruit Heroes" project increased from 93.5% to 98.8% the proportion of students in the Castelo Branco district who consume fruits and vegetables daily at school. The project, which took place during the 2024/2025 school year in municipalities such as Castelo Branco and Covilhã, also increased from 78.2% to 92.6% the rate of students who fully complete the five-week food challenge, and from 68% to 84% the percentage of healthy snacks. The results were presented at the 1st Fruit Heroes Conference, which celebrated 15 years of APCOI's work in preventing childhood obesity in Portugal.
