STF begins unprecedented trial on Vorcaro's messages to Moraes

oglobo15 September 2026 at 14:35

The Federal Supreme Court began the session that will analyze the Federal Police report that pointed to messages from banker Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, to Minister Alexandre de Moraes on the eve of his first arrest, in November 2025. It is the first time the Court analyzes a possible investigation involving one of its members.

The Federal Police prepared the report by order of Minister André Mendonça, rapporteur of the investigations related to Banco Master. The document was forwarded to the Attorney General's Office and triggered a succession of decisions, official letters and accusations among members of the Court, in addition to involving the Federal Police itself, the PGR and the Attorney General's Office.

The president of the STF, Edson Fachin, ended up taking over the conduct of the case. The trial is considered historic for potentially making Alexandre de Moraes the first member of the Court to be investigated directly by the tribunal itself.

Why this matters

This trial is significant because it marks the first time the STF analyzes a possible internal investigation involving one of its own ministers, which could establish important precedents for the transparency and accountability of the Court. The decision could directly affect Minister Alexandre de Moraes and reverberate throughout the Brazilian political and legal landscape, in addition to raising questions about the limits of investigations involving members of the Judiciary.
